This nunnery has an empowering claim to fame—it’s the only one in Nepal where the nuns practice martial arts. The nuns of the Buddhist Drukpa Order train three hours a day, and they break bricks with their bare hands. Heroes in the Himalayas, these strong women delivered supplies to hard-to-reach villages after an earthquake struck Kathmandu in 2015. The kung fu nuns have also taught self-defense classes for women and biked 14,000 miles to protest the human trafficking of women and girls.

It’s permanence and uncertainty have mystified and confounded humans for millennia. One aspect however, that we know for certain, is one day we will all die. Tibetan Buddhist have multifaceted explanations, theories and practices around their concept of death and what happens to a consciousness once it collapses into darkness. Thousands of years of meditation, teachings and living in extreme conditions have given way to rich existential theories built on basic human truths. Blue Kangling is a film that uncovers the collective consciousness of death for Tibetan Buddhist. It is an observational approach revealing individuals who shape, influence and live according to this knowledge. Understanding is established through intimate portraits of commoners, as well as the philosophical and culturally enlightened who offer meaning and insight behind Tibetan Buddhism. Exploring rituals and practices from generations past, we uncover early cultural influences and explanations that answer the existential questions, “Why are they here?” and “Where will they will ultimately go?”

This is the Story of Kellianne Cleeman's first medical mission in Pohkara, Nepal with the Thoracic Surgery Foundation. We collaborated with DJE Visuals for this project.The scholarship she received was funded by Edwards Lifesciences Foundation. These medical missions are an effort to create lasting education and training for local physicians. TSF returns year after year to educate, screen and treat heart valve disease in underserved areas of Nepal.

In Nepal there is wifi in the big cities, but no internet in the small villages. One man connects people to internet in the most remote places of Nepal: Mahabir Pun. He is the king of WIFI. Wifi and internet connection in Nepal are not easy. Can you imagine life without WIFI? Some people live so far away and connecting people to internet in remote places is not something easy. Connecting Nepal to internet is dangerous sometimes: driving in the mountains to access the most remote villages, sometimes with extreme weather. But Mahabir Pun has connected over 200 villages to internet in Nepal. And internet access and wifi have changed the life of people in the small villages. VPRO correspondent Chandan Jha shows us how difficult his job is and how he connects people to internet in Nepal. Dikshya Shrestha is a girl stunt bike rider in Nepal. With her stunt bike, Dikshya Shrestha contests in international race competitions against other Asian girl stunt bike riders. As a girl stunt bike rider in Nepal, Dikshya Shrestha is a role model for many girls and hopes to convince other girls that there is no shame in being a girl stunt bike rider. VPRO Metropolis correspondent Chandan Jha in Nepal met Dikshya Shrestha: she is one of the first girl stunt bike rider of Nepal. VPRO Metropolis follows Dikshya Shrestha for a day to watch her stunt bike riding during her stunts training. People are surprised when they see a girl stunting a motorcycle. In the past it wasn’t common for girls to go out, ride motorcycles or to do stunts. By becoming one of the first Girl stunt bike riders in Nepal, Dikshya Shrestha shows that motorcycles aren’t just for men. Her friends do not always support her to break with traditional gender roles. They think it is not honorable that a girl participates in bike stunts racing. That does not hold Dikshya back from riding her motorcycle and to keep fighting for emancipation of girl riders: “It’s my biggest wish to also have other girl riders represent Nepal abroad.” says Dikshya.
